The Department of Music was established in the year 1950 as a department of ‘Womens Training College’ affiliated to Agra University (Dr, Bheemrao Ambedkar University) with only graduate course in vocal music. Gradually graduate courses in Tabla and Sitar were also intoduced.

Gradually, a number of courses were opened from time to time such as, in the year 1976 post graduate courses in Vocal and Sitar, Ph.D. programme in the year 1987, B.A. Hons. in vocal and sitar in the year 1989-90, B.A. Hons. in Tabla in the year 1993, M.A. in Tabla in the year 1994, applied music in Work Experience Course was added in the year 1998, Post Graduate Diploma in Folk and Devotional Music was opened in 2008 and in the year 2009 M.Phil in dual degree mode was opened. At present department is running full fledged courses from graduate level to research degree level in all the three streams –Vocal, Sitar and Tabla.

In theory courses the departmentincludes theStudy ofClassical Sanskrit Granthas like Natya Shastra, Sangeet Ratnakara, Brihaddeshi.Musical References from Vedas, Ramayana andMahabharat, Jain Granthas andBaudha Granthas.Analyses of theoriespropounded by our ancient Musicologistslike Bharata, Pt. Sharangdeva, Acharya Brihaspati, Matang Muni, etc.Theories propounded by ModernmusicologistslikeJairajbhoy, Fox Strangways etc.Modern areas of study– Western Music and Music of other Nations, Science of Music, Modern History, Theories propounded by Western Musicologists. Knowledge ofCarnatic, Rabindra and Folk Music.

The department has also introduced ancilliary courses for B.Sc. and B.Tech.(all streams) and B.A (Social Sciences)

The Department has also introduced modular courses in:-

  1. Folk Music of India
  2. Repair and Maintenance of Musical Instruments
  3. Gayaki of Agra Gharana

A Common Course as MUM 101 for all the three streams of Music to as Adharbhoot Pathyakram.

The DEI Music department is one of the most important departments as it organizes cultural programmes for all the important events of DEI. The students of this department have won several prizes in Youth Festivals, as Voice of Agra and Sangeet Natak Academy.

Under “SAP’ Scheme of UGC, the Department had an opportunity to develop archives of Music with almost more than 50 Ragas by eminent and Graded Artists of AIR and Doordarshan like – Pt. Devvral Chaudhary, Prof. Pt. Yashpal, Prof. Vidyadhar Vyas, Vidushi Suhasini Koratkar etc.

The Department has also invited eminent music and Musicologists and Music Artists from all courses of India for Seminars and Workshops such as Prof. Devvrat Chaudhary (Delhi), Prof. (Sanjay Banerjee (Robindra Bharti), Prof. Anil Beohar, Prof. Mukund Bhale (Tabla) IKSUV Khairagarh, Pt. Gohadkar (Gwalior), Ustad Sayeed Zafar (Traditional Artist), Vidushi Suchaita Gupta (Varanasi) and many more.

The thrust areas of research are; Music Education, Folk Music, Comparative Studies or Western and Indian Trends, Analysis of the Contribution of Individual Musicians, Effect of Music on Prisoners, Music education, Aesthetics, analysis of Ragas and Talas .
