Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of the University which began its journey in 1947 as a part of the erstwhile Women’s Training College. The Department has made significant growth and progress in recent years. This has been largely due to innovative programmes and the setting up of such goals that lead to high quality expansion of departmental activities. Through different programmes and activities, the Department has been making constant efforts to raise academic, intellectual and scholastic standards. In line with the philosophy of the University and Vision 2031, the Department provides well-rounded high quality education with the mission objective of evolving a ‘complete man’.
Currently the Department offers : B.A. Social Science (Hons.), PostGraduation Diploma in Business Economics (PGDBE),M.A. (Applied Economics), M.Phil. (Economics), Integrated PGDBE - M.A. (Applied Economics) - M.Phil; M.Phil. Integrated with Ph.D.
The core strength of the department is the quality of faculty which is competent, qualified and trained in modern teaching and research methods. The Department is actively engaged in research and developmental activities that have resulted in the publication of a large number of books, reports, and research papers in different fields of Economics. Several faculty members are involved in research projects and are members of distinguished professional bodies. Many students have published their research work in various reputed journals, qualified NET and SLET examinations, and have been awarded the Fellowships. The Department has encouraged a view of learning, in which students are given an opportunity to participate actively in discussions. The Department has been frequently organizing seminars, conferences, workshops and invited talks by academicians and eminent economists. The fast changing economic scenario poses to the department a challenge of continuously updating its curriculum and faculty, which have been made regularly by the department.
