This foundational course in English Literature gives students a firm grounding in all aspects of literary forms, genres, styles and types. A major outcome of the course is to identify various approached to the study of literature and to establish the relevance and importance of literature in culture and Art. The course also helps students to understand strategies of textual interpretation appropriate to different genres.

A basic course in Phonetics improves understanding of the English speech sounds, syllabic structures, stress and intonation. An important outcome is improved pronunciation, basic understanding of English Phonology and Supra-Segmental features of the English language.

Analytical Reading and interpretation of English Drama upto the Renaissance. The course also exposes students to important English dramatists like Marlowe, Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. These texts help students to understand drama as a genre – its analysis, interpretation, and dramatic techniques. This in turn helps them to appreciate drama as an art.

Analytical Reading and interpretation of English Prose upto the 19th century. The course also exposes students to important English prose and essay writers. They also learn to appreciate the use of literary English and the essay as a genre- its form as well as style.

FICTION UPTO 1900

Analytical Reading and interpretation of the English Novel upto the 20th century. The course also exposes students to the beginning and growth of the Novel as an art form—its major trends and types. These texts help students to understand fiction as a genre – its analysis, interpretation, and narrative techniques. The course also exposes students to major novelists of world literature like Dostoevsky and Stephen Crane and important trends in the 19th century English Novel.

The course exposes students to the basic concepts, branches and areas of Linguistics. The course also lays a foundation for critical theory and language studies. Students develop the ability to interpret texts through the understanding of stylistic methods and tools.
