With its modest beginning as an Undergraduate Department (1947) and Post-graduate Department (1969) as a part of Women’s Training College, The Department of English obviously was included in The DEI with its establishment as a Deemed University in 1981. With its strength of 6 well qualified (all Ph.Ds) Faculty (2 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors), the Department runs Major as well as Half and Core Courses besides Work-experience Courses. The saga of its expansion & progress can be witnessed with the introduction of Ph.D. Programme (1984), Certificate Course in Journalism (1998), M.Phil. Programme(2008) and PG Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication (2009).

Awards & Achievements

Prof. V. Premlata & Dr. Bani Dayal Dhir were honoured with Raj Kumar Varshney Award for their research work in Systems Science bySystems Society of India (SSI) during Students Systems Conference (PARITANTRA 2017) organized on October 19, 2017.

News & Events

A three- day workshop was conducted from 28th- 31st January 2017 at the information Neurocognitive Technologies Assisted Language Lab for Primary level learners. In the workshop 100 students of 4th and 5th std. participated. The efficacy of Technology Assisted Language Learning was tested and little learners were trained in learning English through Orell software installed in the Lab. The result was overwhelming and extremely positive. From session 2017 -2018 regular lab classes have started for children from 1st to 5th classes.

Highlights

A 4 day workshop from 4 to 7 March, 2014was organized by the Department of English Studies, DEI to discuss and design a road map for teaching and research collaborative programmes between  the Department of English Studies , Dayalbagh Educational Institute  (Deemed to be University) and  the English Department at the Christian-Albrecht-University (CAU) at Kiel, Germany . 

Department of English Studies, DEI, successfully organized  “DEI- KIEL 1st Faculty –Students Exchange Programme” from 9th March to 28th March 2015 as an initiative towards the internationalization of English language and literary studies. The visiting team from Christian-Albrechts-Universität,Kiel ,Germany comprised  Prof  Cord Casper , visiting faculty  and  Sarah Dost and Frederike Kopke two students of MA (English).
