Dr. Sharma is actively involved in research in the field of Bulk nano materials through severe plastic deformation, multi scale modeling, Intelligent manufacturing in which modeling and simulations of metal forming (ECAP, Twist Extrusion, Upsetting, Hot closed die forging, Piston forging) and metal cutting processes using soft computing techniques is accomplished. Has incorporated agility in forming industry, a novel design philosophy is evolved that is based on intelligent knowledge based systems (IKBS) for enabling rapid redesign of existing production system for entirely new applications. The idea is to make forgings of better quality in the least amount of time and at the best possible price. The main outcomes of the research effort are the development and implementation of efficient design methods for producing forming components by different metal forming processes:

• Developed FE models for various metal forming processes.

• Design and developed soft computing models that can best utilize the results from FE model.

• Developing Metal forming virtual simulation laboratory

He teaches Mechanics of Machines, Manufacturing Process, Operations Management, E-Business, Supply Chain Management, Information Technology, Computing Fundamentals,Managemnet Information systems. His areas of research interest are Bulk Nano Materials, Multi-scale modeling, Severe Plastic Deformation, FEM application in material forming. Dr. Sharma was awarded BOYSCAST Fellowship by Govt. of India for pursuing research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, USA during year 2009. He has won Best paper award at National Systems Conference organized at IIT-Roorkee in December 2008 and at National Systems Conference, NIT-Surathkal, December 2010. He has also won Institution of Engineers (India) INSTITUTION MEDAL, for his research paper entitled Modeling of Hot Extrusion with ANNpublished in the Institution of Engineers (India) Journal in December 2001, Institution of Engineers “Certificate of Merit” for the research paper entitled “Neuro-Fuzzy Modeling of Hot Piston Forging for Agile manufacturing. Dr. Sharma has co-authored 8-International Journal, 7-National Journal, 28 – Conferences resercah papers. He has also authored a book entitled "Introduction to Computers and Programming in C" and a monograph on Fabrication Techniques (For internal circulation at DEI), Introduction to Computers (For internal circulation at DEI). He has completed 4 research projects and 5 more with MHRD, DST, AICTE, UGC and DRDO are ongoing. He has visited as a visiting researcher and undertook collaborative research work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, NY, USA; Center for material forming (CEMEF), Mines Paris Tech, CNRS, Sophia Antipolis, France; Electric de France (EDF), Research Center, Moret sur Loing, Paris France; Transvalor Ltd., Sophia Antipolis, France; University of Maryland, Colleger Park, USA; Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI USA; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, MA, USA; Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI, USA. Dr. Sharma is a member of Institution of Engineers (India), Systems Society of India, Aeronautical Society of India, Indian Society of Mechanical Engineers, Astronautical Society of India, and Indian Society of Technical Education.
