Brief HistoryThe Department of Electrical Engineering, with its illustrious legacy, traces its origin to 1950, when the B.Sc. (Engineering) programme in Electrical Engineering was first introduced, marking the beginning of a distinguished journey in technical education at Dayalbagh. The steady rise of the department was soon reflected in 1961, with the creation of a dedicated laboratory block that housed the Electrical Machines and Material Testing Laboratories, setting the stage for decades of hands-on excellence. A significant academic milestone was reached in 1984 with the commencement of the Ph.D. programme, which opened new avenues for research and innovation. The following year witnessed the establishment of modern laboratories in Microprocessors, Power Electronics, and Heat Transfer, reinforcing the department’s commitment to emerging technologies. The expansion of postgraduate education through the M.Tech. programmes - Part-time in 1990 and Full-time in 1992, further enriched the department’s academic fabric. The department’s pursuit of knowledge dissemination has consistently extended beyond its classrooms and laboratories through the organization and active contribution to major academic and technological forums. This commitment was reflected early on with the National Systems Conference (NSC-94) held in 1995, followed by the hosting of the national seminar NENFAM-96 in 1996, which fostered scholarly dialogue in emerging areas such as neural networks and fuzzy logic. The department further strengthened its academic engagement by organizing the conference on Emerging Convergent Technologies and Systems (SECTAS 2002), addressing interdisciplinary technological advancements. Over the years, the department has also maintained regular academic contributions to the Dayalbagh Science of Consciousness (DSC) conferences, underscoring its engagement with interdisciplinary and philosophical dimensions of science and technology. Parallel to these academic initiatives, the department expanded its research infrastructure and academic offerings. A new phase of technological advancement began with the establishment of the Soft Computing Laboratory equipped with a Linux Cluster and the Image Processing Laboratory in 2005, followed by the creation of an Advanced Computing Laboratory in 2006. The academic landscape broadened further in 2007 with the introduction of innovative programmes, including specialized B.Sc. Engineering courses and integrated pathways such as B.Sc.–M.Tech., B.Sc.–MBA, and B.Sc.–M.Tech.–Ph.D. The department continued to build momentum with the addition of advanced Computer Science laboratories in 2010 and demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable technologies by installing a 150 kWp Solar Electric Power Plant in 2011. This focus on renewable energy was further highlighted through the organization of the conference Fast Forward with Solar Mission (FFSM 2014) at the MTV Puram Campus, Tirunelveli, and later through hosting the IEEE R10 Flagship Humanitarian Technology Conference (IEEE HTC 2016), reaffirming the department’s role in addressing societal challenges through technology. Across its remarkable evolution, the Department of Electrical Engineering has grown into a vibrant, forward-looking academic community, enriched by its heritage, strengthened by innovation, and dedicated to nurturing generations of engineers who uphold the ideals and excellence of Dayalbagh Educational Institute.
